Biografi di QRZ.com

I became a member of ORARI (Indonesia Amateur Radio League) when I was studying at Geological Engineering in ITB Bandung, around 1981. My curiosity and wanting to know more about electronics made me want to join ORARI.

Finished college in 1986 and started work, still on-air at 2m, 80m with initial callsign YD1FFO. Then take the advanced class exam and move up to YC1FFO. Using Yaesu FT-101, Kenwood TS-430S, then also tried Yaesu FT-747GX. However, office work began to take over so that after 5 years of working in the field mostly out of Java Island, the ORARI license became dormant.

On the eve of retiring in early 2020, started to renew the defunct ORARI license. However, the YC1FFO callsign could not be recovered, so I got a new callsign, namely YC1FYH.

A year before retiring, I started browsing to find a suitable rig, suitable in price and suitable for self-repair. Somehow I couldn’t find my old rigs, maybe someone sold those while I was go working outside of Java….hiks. Have to buy one…

The choice fell to the Kenwood hybrid, especially after reading the websites of Kenwood hybrid elmers and masters, including Ken K4EAA, Mike W5RKL, Terry K9TW, Walter KD7DNY, Ron WB4HFN any more masters not to mention.

From reading and studying the discussions on QRZ.com and at the Kenwood hybrid group, I have managed to repair and tune up 7 Kenwood hybrid rigs purchased at bargain prices, from US$50 to US$150 the most expensive. Those are four TS520 (2 D models, 1 S model, and 1 V model) and three TS820 (S, V, and X models). All with 2 final tubes. Thanks to the Kenwood hybrid group, especially Mike W5RKL.

One of the most severe and most time consuming (nearly 6 months) to repair is the TS-520S. Can't transmit, receive low sensitivity…complete as a statue of boat anchor. Repair took a long time, partly because I was reading all the articles and discussions related to the Kenwood hybrid. Including find out the replacement parts that not ready available locally here. And also because …I’m not an electrical engineer hahaha…..!

Finally….job done, all rigs are in good condition and functional, including replacing the final tubes with NOS GE 6883B because the NOS 6146B or S2001A tubes are expensive. I like this TS-520S more than TS-820S. I. just don’t know NB is working or not, as too complicated for me to tune according to service manual.

I'm currently making a database of ORARI's member here who are using the Kenwood hybrid rigs. Only a few people I know so far, perhaps I should go on-air more. After retirement, sure there is enough time for QSO and hobbies, rigs, antennas and other things related to ORARI.
